Why We Left
So I recently departed from my church of many years and from the denomination in which I so desperately wanted to remain.  I tried, I really did.  I made an effort.  I worked with the youth, I invited random people to my house for dinner, I talked to the pastor consistently, I even made a vain attempt at using my degree and participating in adult education, but in the end, I just couldn’t...

New Year's Resolutions Are Stupid Buuuutttt....
I’m pretty well convinced that New Year’s resolutions are a ridiculous waste of time and impose unnecessary moral rules on our lives already weighed down by moralism, but I am making a few little resolutions of my own this year.  Here they are: 1)  I will not ever bite when people troll.  Ever.  If someone refuses to engage or acknowledge something I or another says intellectually I...

FLAGLESS: Submission NOT Endorsement: A... →
flagless: By Ryan Day Thompson Note: I’m going to examine the following text in two palatable parts. It’s long, and my tendency is to the essay (unlike, say, David McElroy, who can pack a punch in less than a thousand words), so I think you’ll served better by short pieces. <tongueincheek> I know most of…

Heck YES.
Anonymous: As a Christian I find it appalling that you care so little about the loss of unborn life.
Me: As a Christian, I find it hypocritical of you to expect a murderous institution like the government, which has killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people through war and misuses/overuses the death penalty, to have the moral discernment to prevent the loss of unborn life through even more force and violence. I also find a big concern in that you would prefer something as serious as abortion to be put on the black market so it can endanger even more lives than it already does. Just because I don’t trust the government to solve a problem doesn’t mean that I don’t care about said problem.

Harry Potter Titles That Should Have Been
My mum was playing with “Titles that flopped” earlier and I thought these would have been funnier than the original titles: Harry Potter and the Magicians Rock Harry Potter and the Basement Snake Harry Potter and the Indefinitely Detained Uncle Harry Potter and the “Try Not to Die” Tournament Harry Potter and the Bird Club Harry Potter and the Mudblood Potions Dude ...

10 Myths About Introverts
From Carl Kingdom: Myth #1 – Introverts don’t like to talk. This is not true. Introverts just don’t talk unless they have something to say. They hate small talk. Get an introvert talking about something they are interested in, and they won’t shut up for days. Myth #2 – Introverts are shy. Shyness has nothing to do with being an Introvert. Introverts are not necessarily afraid of people. What...

Temporal and Eternal in the Coming Crisis
The state, in every political stripe and color, has declared war on its citizens through its standing army in the police force.  It is preparing to place a literal standing army on home soil.   It is degrading into the massive and all encompassing dictatorship into which states must inherently degrade, regardless of how small they are in the beginning. The banking system is on the brink...

haereticum: This is in response to brandonabell’s reblog of my reply to conservativebrew. Sorry, I didn’t want to reblog, but I thought what you said was something that should be addressed. You say that conservatives aren’t all bad, and I would agree with you on a human level. I know conservatives that… THIS ^

Favorite Album of My Year - #8
#8: Ryan Tanner - Seven Years EP I found Ryan Tanner on complete accident.  Jonathan Canlas was running a giveaway on his Twitter that included a pro pack of Ektar, his FIND Guide, and this album in hard copy.  I guess he and Tanner are friends.  At first I thought, “Oh goody, some random music,” but then I found myself very pleasantly surprised.  Tanner’s acoustics, his...

Favorite Album of My Year - #9
#9: Fat Freddy’s Drop - Dr. Boondigga and the Big BW So I was resting from a day of hard snowboarding photography munching on some quality enchiladas cooked up by a generous host when a jazzy, hip, almost R&B but not quite R&B, almost rap but just shy of rap, artist came across the sound waves.  Soul?  Is it soul I’m looking for?  I’m not sure.  The genre is...

I Am the Liberal Radical
Outside of our REI there are often people doing street fundraising for various causes. “Would you like to protect our forests?”  “Hi! I’m from Planned Parenthood.”  “Can you spare a moment for our wilderness?”  And so on. I used to respond to these people with the vitriol of the angry right-winger that I was.  That was a day when I referred to them as...

Favorite Albums of My Year - #10
So, in 2011, I listened to a lot of new music.  Some of it was old and I just discovered it.  Some of it was new and I got to be a part of everybody discovering it at once.  This post and following will lay out my ten favorite albums that I listened to this year.  They are my most frequented in Spotify and iTunes and the ones that impressed me most with their lyrical and melodic genius.  You will...
